Suzuki continues to excel with its SA consumer focussed, uncomplicated range of vehicles, tailored to satisfy the demands of South Africa's fervent motor market.
In their latest endeavour, they revisit a cherished classic, tracing its roots back to its inaugural 1988 generation. Featuring a 1.6L four-cylinder engine, the initial model boasted an output of 60kW. In August 1990, Suzuki unveiled an upgraded version for the Japanese market, powered by a 16-valve G16B engine capable of producing 73.5kW. This iteration also introduced an optional 4-speed automatic transmission. By December 1994, Suzuki made a notable leap with the introduction of the 2.0 V6 engine—a defining moment that marked their foray into the realm of six-cylinder powerplants. Notably, they also incorporated a 2.0-liter Mazda-sourced turbodiesel, broadening their engine lineup. Progressing to 1996, the Vitara underwent a rejuvenating facelift, coinciding with a displacement boost for the V6 engine to 2.5 liters. Simultaneously, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder variant was introduced to the lineup that offered consumers a second option.
Over time, the name "Vitara" has garnered an ardent following in South Africa, celebrated for its versatile performance across challenging 4x4 terrains. The presence of the 2.5 V6 engines also instilled a sense of confidence among the numerous outdoor enthusiasts.
The latest iteration features a 1.5L engine generating a robust 77 kW and 138 Nm of torque. This power is transferred to the front wheels through a choice of either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. While not geared towards adrenaline enthusiasts, this engine effectively addresses a pressing concern—maintaining fuel efficiency at commendable levels during leisurely drives that desires no haste.
Our journey led us along the scenic coastal road of False Bay to Hermanus, and on the return, we navigated the N2 over Sir Lowry's Pass. An intriguing revelation occurred as we ascended from the Botrivier side—the engine's adeptness negated the necessity of downshifting to 4th gear. This realization came as a delightful surprise, as the engine's elevated revs occasionally verge on monotony at legal speeds. Operating around 3300 RPMs, the Grand Vitara assumed an almost-automatic comportment, providing an accomplished driving experience. Speaking of transmissions, it's worth acknowledging that Suzuki could potentially enhance the driving experience and fuel efficiency with the adoption of a 7-speed CVT or a 6-speed gearbox, aligning more harmoniously with the vehicle's overall performance goals and the likeability of the faithful Suzuki fans.
