Mercedes-Benz GLC300d From R1270 000 to R1650 000

The Mercedes GLC 300d, the best-selling vehicle for Mercedes in 2022 with over 100,000 sold to date.

A Geländewagen inspired C-Class like, capable for some confident boosting "off-road" experiences in a luxury compact SUV configuration, offering a remarkably tranquil ride, you can actually hear your own thoughts albeit the fact that it is a diesel engine offering . Originally introduced in 2015 for the 2016 model year, the current 2022/3 GLC has undergone small refinements in terms of interior, exterior, of which the most significant is in the  technology offering.

Its focus on ride quality has been enhanced, particularly with the introduction of the ABC system, or "air body control multi-chamber air suspension." Our journey across typical South African roads, often required when exploring the scenic beauty of our country, was met with seamless comfort thanks to this innovation. The GLC boasts dynamic select engine and suspension modes, complemented by 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. This combination ensures both a comfortable ride and agile handling, instilling the confidence to brave gravel roads after the immense rains and floods we just recently had.

Given the unusual rainfall in September, having such a capable vehicle on hand proved invaluable. Powering the GLC is a spirited 2.0L, 198 kw twin turbo engine with its 269ps/ 266Hp shifting through a well-balanced 9-speed automatic transmission box. It effortlessly negated gear selections across a variety of terrains on our journey to De Rustica Olive Estate, where we celebrated the viewing of the footage done for their prestigious international award achievement, being selected as the World's Best Olive Oil in Spain earlier this year.

While we didn't put its 2500 kg towing capacity to the test, what truly stood out, especially in comparison to our previous trip in the C220d, was the remarkable serenity inside the safe cabin.

Unless you have blabbering backseat drivers, there's little to no disturbance to the peaceful ambiance enhanced by personal option settings easily done for you by the ever present “hey Mercedes” co-driver. This tranquillity is a welcome respite from the daily cacophony we often endure. Driving the GLC turns the journey into a destination itself, making you less inclined to take breaks and explore the captivating attractions along Route 62. Our previous trip in the C220d saw us traveling in the early hours, missing the lush beauty of the Klein Karoo, revitalized by the recent winter rains. A colorful floral tapestry was laid out before us, and we just escaped the harsh unexpected floods in the greater Western Cape.

Any downsides? Well, all of the great mentions come at a price. Some will say it is just outside the margin of a competitive edge to increase its popularity in SA. The next sad reality is that you might find yourself reaching your destination sooner than expected due than the overall enjoyment of the ride experience. Fortunately you can do something about this :)   The positives are numerous, starting with the overall design but mostly the interior personalised integrations.  Ergonomically design elements like the easy to reach spring-loaded back seat buttons that increase the generous 620L boot space whilst the front seats automatically move forward gracefully to allow the seats to lay flat. Little things like the hands free entrance doubled up with all the digital “Mercedes me” innovations erase memories of a time before one could speak to your car. "Hey Mercedes" is always ready and at hand to assist from  opening your windows, sun-roof etc to remind you to not forget your mobile device. The personalized "Mercedes Me" applications takes driving into a whole new experience, with an array of elements from concierge to find your car to safety elements, all in all mesmerizing you from the moment you download the application. Commuting, traveling, and driving are more than just daily routines; they're life choices.

If you have the means (around R22,000) to embrace the sport utility vehicle experience, we strongly recommend a test drive at your nearest Mercedes-Benz dealer. And while you're at it, consider exploring the following other options, which includes:

Audi Q5. From R1000 000 to R1450 000

BMW X3. From R1073 000

Range Rover Evoque. From R1228 000 to R1700 000

Volvo XC60. From R1218 900

If you feel you need something with a bit more panache,  consider the Porsche Macan, from R1 296 000 for the Macan to R1 931 000 for the GTS model.

You may also look into the following when you are in the market for a new GLC: According to Top Auto & News 24.com and Car Gurus the worldwide trend of astronomical car price increases are seen the most in the decrease of sales volumes of the luxury brands. The price of the GLC virtually doubled since its release in 2016, which is the main reason for the diminutive “drop” in second hand prices.
